The very first form of roulette was created in France in the 1700’s by Blaise Pascal who was attempting to create a perpetual motion device. It is believe that the game is derived on a number of English wheel games including Reiner and Roly-Poly among others. The current form of roulette dates back to 1796 where it was introduced in Paris. There are references to the game from Canada and other countries as far back as 1758 though the game was not the same. What is currently known as the American version with both the 0 and 00 pockets on the wheel originate from the German city of Homberg and date back to 1843.

Additionally, there were other forms of roulette that existed in placed like the United States that fell out of favor and disappeared including an American version with numbers from 1 to 28 including 0, 00 and an additional eagle pocket. However, during the 1800’s, these forms of roulette disappeared and roulette spread across both Europe and the United States becoming one of the most popular casino games played in both locations. Roulette is often called the king of casino games thanks to the fact that it was popular in the lavish and opulent casinos of Monte Carlo. Because the game was so popular with the wealthy that frequented Monte Carlo, it became perceived as a game of kings. One reason that roulette has stood the test of time is it is easy, fun to play, and has a rather low casino advantage.
